Planning a Romantic Dinner or Date Night in Downtown Mobile
Downtown Mobile puts dinner, a walk and a nightcap within a few blocks of each other, which covers most of what a good evening out needs. We have been serving dinner on North Jackson Street since 2005, and couples have been marking first dates and fortieth anniversaries at these tables ever since. This is how we would plan it if the evening were ours, starting with which room to ask for and finishing with the block outside. Most of it holds wherever you end up eating. We will tell you how we handle it at NoJa Restaurant, our Mediterrasian dining room a few steps off Dauphin Street.

Ask for the Courtyard or a Corner Table Inside

The building is a renovated townhouse in the 1840s style, and before it was a restaurant it was a private home, a cab company and the Little Turf Club. That history left us with a set of small connected rooms instead of one open hall. You get exposed brick, low light and enough distance between tables that your conversation stays yours. There are no private booths here. If you want a wall table, say so when you reserve and we will do what we can with the seating chart that night. The rest of the building's story sits on what makes us different.
Behind the dining rooms is an enclosed courtyard, vine-draped and strung with lights, built in the New Orleans style. It is climate controlled, cooled through a Gulf Coast August and heated in January, so it works as an outdoor room without the weather coming with it. Our own site calls it Mobile's most romantic courtyard and nobody here has argued with that yet. It holds fewer tables than the dining rooms, which is why it goes first on a Friday.
| The courtyard | The dining rooms | |
|---|---|---|
| The room | Enclosed and vine-draped, New Orleans style | Small connected rooms in an 1840s-style townhouse, exposed brick, low light |
| Comfort | Climate controlled, cooled in summer and heated in winter | Indoor climate year round |
| Best for | Anniversaries, proposals and any evening you want to stretch out | Rainy nights, quieter talk, a two-top tucked into a corner |
| Worth knowing | Fewer tables, so it books out first on Friday and Saturday | No private booths, though the tables are spaced |
| How to get it | Name the courtyard when you reserve | Ask for a wall table when you reserve |
Guide to Alabama named NoJa the Best Romantic Restaurant in Alabama in its 2026 Best of Alabama awards. We said what that meant to us when the results came out.
How Far Ahead Should You Book a Romantic Dinner?
Reserve a weekend table a few days ahead at minimum, and at least a week before Valentine's Day, a Mardi Gras weekend or a holiday. Weeknights are easier to get and quieter for talking. We serve dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 9 PM and are closed Sunday and Monday.

Two things make the timing tighter than those hours suggest. The rooms are small, which is the whole point of them, and it also means a Friday or Saturday can be spoken for days before the weekends. A walk-in has a decent chance on a slow Tuesday and very little chance at 7 PM on a Saturday.
You can book through the OpenTable widget on our site, or reach us by phone or text. Our line picks up from 2 PM, so an afternoon call reaches a person instead of a voicemail. The full mechanics, including how a request you type into the online form reaches us, are written out in our guide to booking a table.
If you already have the date, reserve the table now and call or text (251) 433-0377 with anything you would like us to arrange in advance.
What to Tell Us When You Reserve
Four things change what we can do for you, and all of them are easier to sort out when you book than when you sit down.
- The occasion. We handle an anniversary, a birthday and a first date differently. Knowing in advance is the difference between a good dinner and an evening that feels arranged for you.
- The room you want. Courtyard or dining room, plus a corner if a corner matters. Our gallery shows both if you would rather look before you choose.
- Allergies and dietary limits. Every meal here is cooked to order, so we can usually work around something. The answer depends on the dish and on what came into the kitchen that day, so call ahead and we will tell you straight.
- Any plans after dinner. An early seating gives you the rest of the evening back, and it is the easiest table to get.
Anniversary Dinners in Downtown Mobile
An anniversary dinner works best in a room quiet enough to hear each other, on a night the restaurant is not at full tilt. Downtown Mobile is calmer Tuesday through Thursday than it is on a Saturday. Give yourselves the whole evening, and pick the room before you start thinking about the dishes.

Anniversaries carry a trap that birthdays do not. Couples come back wanting the exact plate they had last year. Our menu turns with the seasons, so a dish you remember from a March anniversary may be gone by October. Book the same table instead of chasing the same dish. The room is the part that stays put, and the kitchen will send you something you have not had before.
"This is my favorite romantic spot in Mobile. The food is always top notch. Elegant but not stuffy ambiance, and warm attentive service." Christy, on our reviews page.
If the date lands on a Sunday or Monday, move the dinner rather than the celebration. The Saturday before fills up faster, so the Tuesday after is often both the easier table and the quieter room. If the dinner is meant to be a gift rather than a shared plan, a gift card covers the meal without committing anyone to a date.
Downtown Mobile Before and After Dinner
We sit a few steps off Dauphin Street in the Lower Dauphin Arts District, which is the stretch of downtown holding the galleries, the bars and the small theatres. That address does some of the work for you on either side of the meal. It is also why the drive over from Daphne, Fairhope or Spanish Fort tends to feel like the start of the night rather than an errand.

The Mobile Arts Council runs LoDa ArtWalk on the second Friday of every month from 6 to 9 PM, with galleries and shops open across the district. If your date falls on one of those Fridays, take a 5 or 5:30 seating and walk the galleries after dessert. That beats trying to fit both into the same hour.
Mardi Gras is the other thing to plan around. The City of Mobile describes weeks of parades filling the streets downtown, and that run leads straight into Valentine's Day, which makes February the month to book earliest. We wrote about our Valentine's Day dinner separately if that is the date you are working toward.
Parking deserves about thirty seconds of thought. The Downtown Mobile Alliance lists free on-street spaces on certain blocks with a two-hour limit, plus metered spaces at a dollar an hour. Public facilities include the Water Street Garage and the County Garage. A dinner you are not rushing will run past two hours, so take a meter or a deck and stop thinking about it.
You can find NoJa Restaurant at 6 N Jackson St, a few doors off Dauphin Street in downtown Mobile. Reserve a table online, or call or text (251) 433-0377 and tell us which room you want and what you are celebrating. If dinner out is not the plan this time, the same kitchen sends takeout by phone and the dessert menu comes with French press coffee and after-dinner drinks. Gift cards are available online too.
